Free Day at the Women’s Grand Prix in Cyprus

After five rounds of intense chess, the players enjoyed a breath of fresh air on their rest day, in order to recharge batteries for the four remaining games. Among other activities, the organizers chartered a bus with a tourist guide to visit Pano Lefkara.
Located on the southern slopes of the Troödos Mountains in the Larnaca District of Cyprus, Lefkara features cobbled limestone streets and picturesque architecture and is famous for its lace and silver handicrafts, which date back to the fourteenth century.
We attended an exhibition of fine hand embroidery, relished on some of the local pastries and Cypriot delights and visited the Church of the Holy Cross ("Timios Stavros"), famous for its hidden crypt concealing a large, silver-gilded cross which is believed to contain wood from the True Cross.
Lefkara has been listed among "The 30 most beautiful towns in Europe" by the Japanese Association of Travel Agents.

Taking advantage of the presence of the five-times World Champion Vishy Anand in Cyprus, during the afternoon a Q&A session was held with the champion, followed by a simul display, in which he faced eighteen of Cyprus’s best junior players.
